Cappenberg Castle

The exhibition presents Westphalian history since the Middle Ages. The Baron vom Stein, the Prussian statesman who established a modern municipal system and decisively contributed to the emergence of the Prussian province of Westphalia and of the LWL, the museum’s umbrella organisation.

History

The Cappenberg Abbey, located in Selm in the Unna district, was founded in the 12th century by Premonstratensian canons. Baron Karl vom und zum Stein acquired it in 1816 and lived here after his retirement, until his death in 1831 at the age of seventy-four.

Visiting Baron vom Stein

Permanent exhibition

The newly designed permanent exhibition "Visiting Baron vom Stein" is dedicated to the life and work of the Prussian reformer, who acquired Cappenberg Castle in 1816 and died there in 1831 at the age of 74. Visitors embark on an exciting journey back in time to the year 1829.

What's special is that there are no no object labels. Visitors can call up specific information about the objects via an audio guide that can be borrowed on site. In addition to the baron himself, two fictional characters, the valet Johann and the maid Luise, guide their "guests" through the Biedermeier castle rooms. The "guests" are given a glimpse behind the scenes of the castle business during von Stein's lifetime. They learn details of the baron's family history and his career and reflect on daily and cultural-political issues of the time.
